General fandom

oh my god I still can't believe they let me do this - A month and a half or so ago, the marketing agency for MGM Studios contacted us -- us being LJ -- and said they wanted to set up a sponsored community for the upcoming release of their movie "Blood & Chocolate"....And then they said, hey, we hear that LJ is a place where online fandom tends to congregate. What could we do to reach out to that community? ...// Every time that mainstreaming-of-fandom debate rolls around again, a lot of people agree that like it or not, TPTB know about fandom and will try to consciously manipulate it for their own game. I kind of like to think of this project as manipulating back, in a way.

Re-emergence of the Friendship OTP - I think, though, that what really draws me into these characters is the fact that they almost universally have a strong bond with another guy, a friendship that is meaningful and defining to them and I just love that.

The Pro's and Con's of New Fandom - [Ugly Betty] has been on the air for a few months now in the US, and while perhaps not having an online fanbase as large as most sci-fi shows would have at this point I'm shocked at how tiny it seems to be. Especially when compared to the fic levels in the BSG fandom at the same point in its evolution, which primarily were generated by a smaller UK audience. // Is there a reason for this? Is it simply that sci-fi shows generate more of an online following than mainstream TV because of its 'geeky' status? Is it because the concept of sci-fi shows allow for more possibilities and freedom to write what you want to because to an extent 'anything goes'?

A semi-complete inability to fandom-hop - And now, even though I love CSI: New York, and Supernatural, and Criminal Minds, and Friday Night Lights, I can't really just jump in and write them, even the ones for which I have stories to tell. // Some of this may be my paucity of time ... but I think the real driving force is the character voices. Before I feel like I can try writing something in a fandom, I feel like I need most, if not all, of the canon under my belt, I need to have watched (and re-watched) enough and consistently, that I have the patterns of speech and the slang and the quirks of dialogue and grammar, and even the subjects of discussion down before I feel like I'm even qualified to try.

WIP/story fragments poll - The question of WIPs, unfinished fics and fic fragments… I have my own attitude toward these bastard stepchildren of fandom. I was gonna write a big long post about it; but first I’m curious about the practices of people who aren’t me…

The Grand List Of Photoshoppage Rules Of Thumb - This is just a very, very rough list of things I've picked up over the years, by no means comprehensive.
