Fandom Meta

[livejournal.com profile] resonant8 - Work vs. fandom I spent all my spare time last night and this afternoon on dorrie6's anonymous love meme; I'm finding it surprisingly addictive. Yet another way in which fandom is superior to work.

[livejournal.com profile] fairestcat - In which Cat is unusually bitchy OK. Somebody explain to me how exactly my choosing to reccommend a story I find enjoyable is "unfair".

[livejournal.com profile] nestra - [So there's another round] You control how much enjoyment out of this experience you get. The Wheel of Fannish Fortune goes around and around, and if you're a fan of the major pairing in one fandom, you won't be in the next. Sometimes it's impossible to predict what pairings, characters, or shows will catch on, and it can be a frustrating experience. But if you hold other people responsible for how much fun you have, you'll be disappointed.

[livejournal.com profile] wickedwords - Curly shall not touch Curly at the core of this joke is the concept of contrast and its importance in drama. While the 'rules' I mentioned focused on the physical similarities, over the years others were that addressed attitudinal and backgrounds, from 'alien shall not touch alien' to 'scholars shall not touch scholars' and so on.

[livejournal.com profile] valentintwice in [livejournal.com profile] sausagefestival - All Hail Mary Sue Here's my Social Theory paper. ... A Pornographer Rebellion [ETA: same essay in her personal LJ HERE for potential commenting purposes]

[livejournal.com profile] minim_calibre - Reading and reccing (or, just because I'm shameless, doesn't mean I'll share). In my post on writing and shame, I said, "As a reccer, well, I really only rec a thing here if I loved it so much that I require other people to babble at regarding it. I don't think I've ever thought about what the neighbors would think in that context, you know?" // Which the more I think of it... yes and no. Because the fact is, I do think about what the neighbors might think. Just not what they'd think of me based on the rec.

[livejournal.com profile] jadelennox - yellow prose and emotion This is very apparent at Yuletide, when hundreds of fanfic authors value the writing of fanfic true to a literary souce text, and value it so highly that someone (was it FPRIVATE "TYPE=PICT;ALT=[info]" kattahj?) last year pointed out that yuletide fic barely resembles fanfiction per se at all, so much as it resembles lost chapters. Instead of putting in the romantic / angst-ridden / weepy / erotic scenes fanfic is renowned for (for good or ill), yuletide fic often provides chapters which could have been part of the original source text if only (if only the characters were gay / the original had sexual pairings / the murderer met the victim / etc).

[livejournal.com profile] darkrosetiger - [on rapefic and fantasies] In this post, researchgrrrl wrote about her experiences as a rape survivor, and how it informs her belief that writing rapefic about real people is wrong. ... To me, the implication is that there are some things that it's unacceptable to think about, and that thought and action carry the same moral and ethical weight. // I don't believe that. // I'm sure there are people who don't fantasize about things they would never do, but I'm certainly not one of them

[livejournal.com profile] lothy in [livejournal.com profile] dsfics - On assigning roles in fanfiction D/s It's interesting seeing what characters are portrayed as dominants and submissives in fanfiction D/s stories. People can sometimes be very picky about which character they see in which role (including myself), whether consciously or subconciously, and for most characters there are no general consensus in their fandoms.

[livejournal.com profile] alixtii - Mmm, 'Cesty: Incest and the Adolescent Fantasy All of these texts act out a specific type of wish-fulfillment fantasy: the usurpation of parental authority by a child who is revealed to be more intellectually mature than her adult counterparts. It is a fantasy that pings powerfully for me (as well as many others), even now that I am no longer quite a teenager. It is an especially potent expression of the will to power, being beyond all authorities because one is just that good, ubermensch.

[livejournal.com profile] metamiri - On Fantasizing About a Trangendered CharacterI have amused myself today, in my quiet moments, thinking up a complicated, dialogue-filled fantasy about me and Judy Squires from Better Than Chocolate. I suppose I'd classify the fantasy, if I were to write it, as a me/f. // My fannish interests are rarely that personalized, and my fannish fantasies are usually more voyeuristic (filtered through the eyes and emotional responses of someone else, and often I wouldn't really want to be with either of the pair, though I may enjoy seeing them get together without me.).
