General Fandom Meta

[livejournal.com profile] esorlehcar - [untitled] - I hate that happy is pejorative. I hate that schmoop is an insult. I hate that stories dripping with so much gratuitous angst it's a wonder they don't collapse under the weight of their own misery are considered better and more literary than stories that include even a moderate amount of schmoop.

[livejournal.com profile] maygra - A genre by any other name is a boondoggle. - so, esorlehcar has a essay [[here]] about schmoop (liking the genre, not so happy with the word). I feel the same way about smarm, which I think is a disingenuous label for stories where UST is never resolved to the point of stretching my credibility. I have a love/hate relationship with the genre, a true dislike for the word.

[livejournal.com profile] winterlive - [ all i do is talk ] - some people write rpf fic i don't like, and wouldn't read. people write fpf** that follows these rules too. i don't find fpf non-con any more or less objectionable than rpf non-con. love it or loathe it, imho non-con is non-con, across the board. doesn't matter who's forcibly doing what to who. i think that people who claim rpf non-con is in some way worse than fpf non-con are wrong, i disagree with that viewpoint.

[livejournal.com profile] transgeneric - On Gender, Academia, Acafandom, and SPN vs. Heroes - Perhaps it’s premature to trace out a Heroes vs. Supernatural aca vs. fan face off. But I think it’s there, lurking under the surface and in the corners.

[livejournal.com profile] amireal - On plot and the guessing thereof. - Just because the line is really good and awesome and you love it to death and it doesn't spoil the plot in any way doesn't mean I won't be upset if I realize I saw/heard it in advance. More importantly, just because you can't guess the plot based on a random tidbit here and there doesn't mean *I* won't. I do that, I guess plot.

[livejournal.com profile] elspethdixon - Old Fandom, New Fandom, and melodrama - From the grand Bitchy Old Fan wisdom generated by five years in fandom, with the aid of a friend who’s spent ten years in fandom, I present a slightly different categorising system.// First Wave Fandom: Fanfic what was in zines. // Second Wave Fandom: Fandom what was on mailing lists. // Third Wave Fandom: Fandom what is on livejournal.

[livejournal.com profile] fabu - Gentle reminder - Just a gentle reminder that if you're participating in some kind of fic or art exchange this month, please thank the person who created a gift for you. It's just like when mom expected you to send a thank you note both to Aunt Suzie who gave you the new Duran Duran tape and to Great Aunt Eunice who gave you the ugly chartreuse cardigan; whether you liked it or not is irrelevant - someone went to a lot of time and trouble to do something nice for you, and saying "thank you" isn't optional.

[livejournal.com profile] pir8fancier - Query Flisters - Does swearing in a fic bother you or not and why if it does?

[livejournal.com profile] violet_quill - Crossposting: Good or Evil? - Do you crosspost // Does it annoy you when other people crosspost // Do you have a specific threshold for annoyance // What about where?

[livejournal.com profile] cereta - Slashiest show ever - So, simple enough question: what, in your humble estimation, is the slashiest tv show you've ever encountered? With details, please - make your case!

[livejournal.com profile] juliejordan in [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants - [untitled] - I'm really starting to hate rec lists. In every fandom, it just seems to be the same old authors who get recced over and over again, and any new or not as recognised "talent" continues to go unnoticed because we're all too comfortable with the authors we know. We like to play it safe because of badfic fears and while that's understandable, it's also a shame.

[livejournal.com profile] esorlehcar - [untitled] - I've been doing the reccing thing for years, in multiple fandoms. I rec because there are many, many things I love, and when I love things, I want to babble about them, tell everyone I know, "Holy god, you have to read this." I rec because I love having a masterlist of stories I adore where I can find nearly anything I want to reread. I rec because hearing people say things like "Your rec list got me into this fandom" is one of the best fannish feelings in the world. I rec for me, first and foremost

On Vidding

[livejournal.com profile] cmshaw in [livejournal.com profile] vidding - VIDDING META: iMeem and vidder visibility - After less than two weeks of vidder community presence -- the Vidding Meem was created three days ago -- vidding has caught attention outside of fandom and vidders (and presumed vidders*) have been issued non-fannish contest invitations.

[livejournal.com profile] morgandawn - Deep Thoughts On Vidding And Going Mainstream - I would like to see fan vids becoming more mainstream. Both as a vidder who wants more recognition, more viewership and the ability to impact (in a small way) the hearts and minds of popular culture. As a consumer, I want more to see, I want it to be easier to see (streaming) and the ability to see what I want, when I want and at no cost.

[livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r - Just call me a crank - I still believe, no matter how much people want to make us out and proud, that fan vidders in live action are playing a game of chicken here. For some, maybe a C&D letter or demand for reparations, or losing your web space, or getting hit with a lot of threatening TOS violations, isn't scary. But it is to me.
