General Fandom
kita0610: I've been wanting to make this post for a long time — "Politics and sexual preferences are unmixy things. You can still be a feminist even if you like the idea of big men throwing you onto a bed and tying you up. Even if you let the big man in your life really do it."
veejane: [untitled] — "Someday, probably soonish, that "Oh, we just noticed this copyright violation!" part of the equation will get some legal scrutiny, and it will be proved that corporate practice and the law are not on speaking terms, and something will change. Exactly what and how, I don't know."
wolfling: On a writer's responsibility... — "It is not my responsibility to make sure what I'm writing has the correct "moral" consequences. If I want to write a rape scene that has no repercussions or even one that leads to a real relationship between victim and attacker, I can. If I want an incestuous relationship that is more schmoopy than fucked up, I can. Hell if I want to write two brothers in a noncon bdsm threesome with a duck I can. As long as it's the best damn noncon incestuous threesome with a duck I can write, I've lived up to my responsibilities."
zortified: Incest and Fiction — "I could ramble and rant and go on, but really my opinion on the matter is this: I will write, read, and enjoy anything I want to. I will avoid writing and reading what I don't want to write or read. You do the same."
liviapenn: How to Not Ruin Yuletide — "Yes, in the larger scheme of things,
yuletide itself is not that big a deal. But it is something that people look forward to all year. It's an event where people volunteer to give presents to people they may not even know. It's an opportunity for authors to stretch themselves and write in fandoms, styles or pairings they may not have ever written before. It's a fannish event with no downside, really. So I think it's important for everyone to try really hard NOT to be The Thing That Ruins Yuletide."
celisnebula: Rights of a reader… — "As a reader of my free writing – my intellectual property if you will – you have no real rights to it. You haven’t paid for it. I can’t stop you from saving a copy of it, but I can, legally, stop you from archiving it. I can also stop you from sharing it, and from distributing it if I find out about it, because it is my property."
Polls, Questions, Etc.
jlh: Good riddance daylight savings, and a question about media fandoms — "Is there a media fandom, of reasonable size, where the source text does not have either (a) a lot of slash potential or (b) SF content?"
parthenia14: [untitled] — "Apart from the usual stuff (characters, stories, slash etc etc), what do you think is the biggest difference in writing style between published fiction and fanfiction? Is there a recognisably fanficcy way of writing?"
cupidsbow: Circles of Fannish Influence — "I've never seen this discussed before, and I really want to know: what do you do if you see someone "referencing" your work in this way? Do you engage? Squee? Say nothing? Assume you are paranoid and it wasn't really anything to do with your work?"
flambeau: chapter and verse — "Pretend there's a poll here and write a comment instead: do you write in chapters? Does it come naturally to you or did you pick up the habit in one of your fandoms? Do you switch between chapters and no chapters in different fandoms? How much planning do you put into the narrative structure if/when you write in chapters, as opposed to not writing in chapters? Do you make a difference between working with chapters and dividing a story up in parts or segments in some other way that you're going to explain to me in comments? How long does a story have to be for you to conceptualize it in chapters? Do you like to work with cliff-hanger chapter endings?"
