Wife or Mother in Law? For a while now whenever I think of fandom I think of it symbolized by this picture. . . . It's that optical illusion where when you look at it you either see an old woman or a young woman

RPF Redux right, wrong or otherwise, American pop culture sanctions publicly-displayed fantasies about celebrities. . . . I'm beginning to wonder if your average non-fannish-type would give RPF a cock-eyed glance not because it's a fantasy about real people, not because it's a published fantasy about real people, but simply because actually writing out RPF involves more work than just sitting and daydreaming. I wonder if it's the effort that would weird a non-fan out, moreso than the content.

on: What Makes a Good Slash Pairing? although I’m reading these other slash pairings like The OC and Lost, I’m just not seeing it. . . . So writers and readers, I guess what I’m wondering is what makes a character slashable?

Historical Events and Milestones in Fandom So I ask you all, what Milestones in fandom do you think are important - and what "false" ones have you seen. Where have fandoms suddenly changed and why. What kinds of stories or character types or so forth have been brought to the fore or crystalized in certain fandoms.

Defending Spike/Tara (if it needs to be defended) Yet when it comes to the fact that, at least, fanonically, I 'ship Spike/Tara, which has been pointed out in the discussion/general airing of feelings and I will admit to feeling picked on, and frustrated because I haven't seen much discussion of why this phenomenon exists, except for references to the negative reasons why people might do so. Critique, critique, critique I think all of us have wrestled with what kind of feedback to send, whether the author can "take it," and whether it's worth our time to bother.

So, wait, I'm not a fantasy author either? There are many good reasons that we fantasy authors use fantastical elements. All of us.

The Beta's Perspective and
The Writer's Perspective Writing consultants really aren't that difference from beta readers, after all, and most of fandom is on the web these days. OWLs work for us, in other words, so why don't they work for other people
