- cupidsbow: “The appeal of slash” by cupidsbow (Mini Meta) - The thing I remember most strongly about the first slash stories I read was that the slashed couple didn’t understand what was happening to them (hence: we’re not gay, we just love each other). Despite their confusion, both characters had agency in their desire; the trajectory of the story brought them to a place where they owned their desire and understood it. -
crabapplered : [in yourthoughtson] untitled - A fanfic’s summary and warnings are essentially the author saying “I would like to do this/this/this and hopefully get a reaction. y/n?” and then the reader deciding if they wish to consent to that exchange. -
annerbhp : Worst book EVER and awesome things that make up for it. Sort of. - Dear lord, the sheer volume of this type of story out there boggles my mind and makes me want to write letters to authors and say, “Do you know what is missing from your life? Fandom.” Because in fandom, at least, it always seems like there is one person willing to call you on your shit, or at the very least, meta their hearts out OVER and OVER again in the hopes that maybe someone will read it and buy a clue. -
fan_eunice : I’m about to say some things that might - Please explain to me exactly how squee, meta, icons, fanart, fanvids, and the billion other ways in which fans interact with the text are some how invalidated by one activity that is part of a larger whole? What was that about not listening to or valuing women’s voices, again? I am tired of seeing discussions of ‘fandom’ equated with ‘fanfic’ which is then completely removed from it’s context. -
executrix : Meta: Ze Wasn’t There Again Today - An important thing to remember about fandom, particularly when reading or writing meta, is that it’s sort of like running the gantlet. At any given moment, you are likely to be clubbed by people on both sides of you, but at least you can’t really argue that you’re being whaled on by one person who can’t make up zir mind about WHY you deserve to get clobbered. It’s not the SAME people who say “don’t write about people like me! You’re Othering and fetishizing!” and who say “you didn’t write about anybody like me! You erased us!” It’s different people. Phew. Albeit, more clubs. -
- abyssinia: Are we avoiding one mode of sexism only to perpetuate another? - if you approach fandom as a respite where you can ignore sexism and gender roles for a while, that’s great. I really am honestly glad it provides you with a safe place and you should interact with fandom in the ways which make you happy. I get that we have different experiences within and outside of fandom. Personally, I’m a lot more tired of spending my life dealing with double standards and erasure and then coming online, to a place to relax and enjoy the things I love, and encountering more double standards and erasure. -
- goldjadeocean: Where are the femslash epics? - Goddammit, now I want a femslash epic. I am sick of this “the lives of gay women are so grim and dreary we can only come up with escapist bits of fluff about them” thing fandom has going on. -
- lanjelin: Facets of fandomI see fandom as a set of faceted reflections of the original work, the canon.
People take part in fandom for different reasons and in different ways, but it's all in response to the original work
netmouse : Ending Sexual Harrasment at cons - I want to emphasize that whole list of what you should not do without explicit permission: touch, hover over, leer at, or otherwise harass someone. I believe we should have a community culture where, if you see someone doing this to someone else, if that person complains or asks for help, you should take them seriously, and respond with support. -
