  • [livejournal.com profile] execharmonious : you are somebody’s kink - there’s a lot of feeling, and it’s understandable feeling because the idea creates such a shock reaction, that to be looking at someone else’s pain and having the first reaction be one other than sympathy and a human identification with that person is a moral failing. That any caring person would look at the person first, and their sympathy for the person would overwhelm and banish that kink, if only they knew their pain. But t’ain’t so. Kinks are deeply-ingrained things. Emotional reactions are deeply ingrained things. -

  • waldo: Yes, I’m back on this horse again... (h/c debate redux) - I really thought that fandom on the whole had gotten to a point where we accepted that if something is triggery for you, for whatever reason, that you should decide to read something else. And that badfic will happen. We can’t do much about it, but try to help the person see why their fic was unsuccessful and hope they do better the next time around[...]And yet, in this debate, those of us who like to read/write hurt/comfort seem to be the bad guys because we *might* step on someone’s real-life toes. -

  • waldo: H/C_Bingo and Why I Object to Some of the Objections - I object to the assumption, right out of the box, that I’m going to do it wrong. That I can’t possibly write a condition I’ve never experienced with compassion, accuracy or realism. I object that there’s an assumption that I’ll be an irresponsible writer. Are you implying that there’s no one who writes other kinds of fiction that’s irresponsible? -

  • solvent: holy tl;dr - more meta about responsible storytelling - I think that, like a lot of Christian models for thinking about ourselves and our impulses, the account of storytelling that alixtii sets out offers both reassurance/comfort - “yes, this is good and this is important, carry on” - and a warning (“this is good and this is important; be careful with it”). -

  • telesilla: Wait, silencing? - Because here’s the thing, “I was just following my artistic vision!” is not a get out of jail free card. Neither is “I’m exercising my right to free speech!” Free speech is a two way street, people, and artistic vision doesn’t shield you from people telling you that your end result is, (again, an example) racist. -

  • nicki: On problematic writing.having the issue pointed out didn’t create the problem. The person pointing out the issue isn’t inserting that issue into our psychology, it was already there. If you have lettuce in your teeth and the person across the table points it out, it is not the person across the table’s fault that the lettuce is there.

So, some questions it might be a good idea to ask if a problematic issue is pointed out:
