innocentsmith: R&R this poll or I wont post teh next!!1! - What do you guys think about stories posted serially? That is, not just in separate posts because of length, but with a bit of a wait (a day, a week, a month) between each new chapter's appearance? -
- vee_ecks: This Needs To Be Said, Too - A witch hunt is like the exact opposite of a lynching, even metaphorically. Especially metaphorically.
- seperis: use and abuse of the atomic bomb, and other words weighted in history - There are powerful words being thrown like grenades or dynamite. Striking words, words weighted with history, that taste of McCarthyism and Proposition 8 and every way that people in power have attempted to silence people who had none. Blacklist. Boycott. Thought Police. These have been, are, will be weapons of silencing, actions that were taken against, among other things, people demanding social change. -
- tevriel: A curious parallel - Anyway, the thing is this: at the end of the 18th century, radical movements for social and political change changed from being the hobbyhorse of a few wealthy intellectuals (yes, I'm guilty of gross reductionism, shh) to the product of widespread working-class involvement, thought, activism, argument. The lower orders, as they were known, began speaking up, demanding representation, demanding rights.
This was a problem, and was met with repression, where the previous advocates of universal suffrage and suchlike had been tolerated calmly. -
- evil_underlord: Ok, so this is not as well written or as full and wide ranging as I might like to make it - SFF has a large scope for escapism and entertainment, and a smaller but important scope for the making of some very powerful artistic points. The use of allegory to explore difficult and prickly concepts without directly referencing the parties involved, or to extrapolate the ideas without getting bogged down in the detail, is a powerful and valid tool. And yet the language and the tropes and the convention that has codified, that was present in the progenitors of the genre, are intrinsically divisive. -
- smhwpf: Race Fail vs Cultural Appropriation - But I'm not sure of the boundaries of this. Is there a difference between CA and just generally writing PoC characters in a failsome way? Is CA a particular subclass of Race Fail?
And how does it apply to things beyond writing? -
- unusualmusic: Authors, ladies and gents, are NOT entitled to my cash - some people still seem to be of the opinion that what is said on the the internet is compartmentalized and not relevant to the offline personality of the person. So according to this reasoning, apparently, the views expressed online are unlikely to flavour the characterizations of women and POC and LGBTs in their books. -
- jimhines: Anger, Part II - So the question I want to get into here is what expressions of anger are okay, and when does expressing anger become abusive? And if you think I'm going to climb up on my pedestal and decree How Thou Shalt Express Thy Anger, you're crazy.

- mariallegra: RaceFail and etiquette hell - When you have made someone feel unaccepted because she is part of an oppressed group, you have done a very rude thing. Resulting anger is a logical consequence, not a vicious orc attack. When you use "polite" language to oppress others and expect an orderly response that doesn't challenge your correctness in doing so, you might as well be painting cow shit with watercolors and hoping the Louvre will buy it off you. -

- bossymarmalade: and we can't watch fox because they own those chemical weapons plants in syria - I feel the same way about boycotting some of the authors who've been failing it up. I'm not doing it to punish or silence or send a message to them. They are the very least of my concerns. -

- moondancerdrake: Today's Frustration - This is why when white writers say it's too hard to write CoC, too risky, that these words upset us. They're the ones out there with the sizable readerships, with the big contracts, with the ability to make a positive change so our children don't have to grow up without characters they could look up to in spec fic. -

And by "connoisseur" I mean "hello, I am super picky." -
