General Fandom Meta
cathexys - SUNDAY META REVISITED: WNGWJLEO I'd argue that WNGWJLEO is still a popular trope even as our protagonists' sexual identities have become more open to gay or bi identities and we as audience are more willing to read them in such a way. As a result, many declare WNG a horridly homophobic trope and gladly observe its disappearance. If I don't want to let go of the term quite as easily, it's because to me it represents a category above and beyond Bodie declaring that he hates buggers as he's passionately fucking Doyle and planning their lifelong commitment...
executrix - Meta: Herman in the Bus Station I think that a lot of the confuzzlement about fannish interactions occurs because, in a lot of ways, fandom is *more* like a biological family than a family of choice. That is, you're stuck with 'em, you don't get to pick 'em. If you are in a rare fandom, or a fan of a rarepair, then you pretty much have to maintain a minimal level of civility just to participate at all, even with people who did the equivalent of stealing the crystal bonbon dish that Grandma promised you.
inalasahl - Still Day 1352: Didn't have the extenders, tended to shake Fandom has a few "get out the meta" movements going on right now. They seem to be working; either that or fandom is in one of those harvest periods that go around from time to time. All I know is all this discussion is making me thinky. I wish to take part, but meta is a hard thing for me.
verstehen - Okay, so I lied. *Now* I've exceeded my doing stuff quotient for the month I love the show [Heroes]. Of course I do, it hits several of my comic book kinks (and if you try and convince me it's anything but a graphic novel put to screen, I'm going to laugh in your face). It hits several of my dramatic kinks. The story is all good.
But as time goes on, I'm more and more concerned about the ethnic portrayals we see.
angelhunter - Augen zu, Zähne zusammenbeissen und ans deutsche Fandom It is a great idea and a commendable goal to improve the German fandom. I don't deny that. But I get all defensive and aggressive when I get the feeling that an attempt is made to force me to write in German because - by chance - that is my mothertongue. Sorry, but it doesn't work that way.
lapillus - For
iulia_linnea, who was curious... She asked, "I'm curious about what interests you about slave fic; I know youmay not be able or want to discuss it, but, if you can and don't mind,it would be interesting to hear your take on what makes the genre workfor you. :)"
lothy - Apparently, another name for 'friendship' is Unresolved Sexual Tension It is the wisdom of When Harry Met Sally that a man and a woman cannot be friends without at least one of them thinking of shagging the other.
In every book, film, or TV show where an unmarried man, and an unmarried woman, have a strong friendship, there is invariably cries of "UST!" People want them to get together, and in many cases they do. After all, the writers often share the feelings of "The hero should get the girl!"
On Reading, writing, and vidding
brown_betty - Boy kissing: NO GOOD To me, most vids are experiences in attempting to share a reading of the canon. (Leaving aside vids that obviously aren't intended that way.) The vidder takes clips, and shows how, if you put this clip between these clips, a theme emerges.
malkingrey - Just Call Me Ms. Cranky... I have some strong opinions about the presentation-and-archiving aspect of web-based fanfic†
ethrosdemon - [untitled] Jensen Ackles comes from a very middle class and educated background (and his mother is a Yankee). His normative speech isn’t Hollywood so much as it is just standard speech of his social class in his age group. He seems hyperaware of this in a way that points to me that this is from his raising rather than heavy-duty vocal coaching, because he controls it the same way I can my own—this is training over a lifetime. This is why Dean doesn’t sound like Jensen because he is far looser with his vowels than Jensen is himself. Dean’s accent is NOT Jensen “slipping”
nakeisha - Writing Challenges - Prompting Stories About ninety-five percent of the time (at least) I have already decided which prompt my story will be used for, before I've even started the story. Indeed I'll write the story to fit the prompt in a lot of cases, and if I haven't done this, I will always decide on what the prompt will be before I post my story.
lunabee34 - POV, that hateful bitch One aspect of my writing that I continue to struggle with is POV. I have trouble remaining consistent with the POV I choose and have to proofread carefully for that mistake. Once I’ve chosen a POV, I have difficulty deciding how to include necessary information that the character from whose perspective I’ve chosen to write wouldn’t know. And then there’s the whole thing where I can’t seem to successfully manage any POV except third person limited.
