Fandom's Shortest Meta Post - Slash = romance novel with two men.

Race in Fantasy - So I was reading a favorite series again last night when once again, like a bolt of lightning to my brain, I was struck by how pale all of the characters were. There were many "races," but all of them were described as looking similar, with perhaps olive skin as the darkest skin could get.

Slash me, baby redux - In a standard het pairing, there are certain societal expectations regarding gender and power. In fic of any sort, the man tends to be physically stronger while the woman tends to be emotionally stronger, and the story proceeds from there with very few exceptions. // Slash, however, takes that particular gender dynamic away.
shusu LJ: on shock-value versus encouragement - I do take exception to the idea of daring people to do "bad kinks." // It's not the dare part, or the bad part, or the kink part. // It's because the combination implies that these stories are supposed to suck.

"Some Fierce Maenads": Revisiting Mary Sue, Picture Comms, & Claims on Fannish Objects-- - I said before that Mary Sueing in picture comms short-circuits communal sharing because it shoves a specific person(s) in between the community and the object of fannish interest, and it does.

Corrupted by fandom - Anyway, reading Horace's
Ars Poetica tonight, and it's just like reading Aristotle's
Poetics and a lot of Plato's stuff: I keep thinking of fandom and fanfiction!

untitled - I would not voluntarily click on a link to a fic with incest warning, and there were times when I closed the firefox tab as soon as there was even a hint of incest in a fic which had no previous warning. It's major squick, a squick like whoa. And I was wondering if it's in any way related to the fact that I have a brother and we're pretty damn close [eta: in a bestfriendish way, I mean], or if it's something else.
