General Fandom
partly_bouncy in
girlwank: Fan history wiki: Femslash links behind cut — "The fan fiction history wiki. Originally, it was created after much deliberation, as a place to store information regarding the history of fan fiction that I had collected over the years. And I'd like more contributions to it because I know a lot of areas are sparsely detailed and under represented. I also have problems knowing some areas because I do not know know a lot of fandoms and I do not necessarily know what roles people played."
painless_j: As another PS to the reviewing thingie — "In such a case, if I clearly dislike what I just started reading, the best course of action for me is probably to quit, to click the back button. No time wasted, no negative emotions either for myself or for anybody else, much annoyance spared. The fics where I don't feel immediate displeasure are much more interesting to analyse. For all my saying "I don't like this kind of thing," for every genre or theme or kink I don't like, I've read at least 5-6 fics that I liked."
isiscolo: lies, damn lies, and website statistics (1) — "This is not a whine about not getting "enough" feedback, or a complaint about feedback patterns (nor am I trying to show off); I'm simply trying to analyze fandom behavior, because I think statistics are cool. Also, although some general conclusions may certainly be drawn, this is in no means universally applicable to every story by every writer in every fandom. This is me, looking at how many people read my stories, and how, and how many send feedback."
lozenger8: What's in a name? — "What's in a name? A whole lot, as it turns out. The world's finest writers are aware of the power of names. Dickens was particularly adept at creating names which sum up his characters. He knew which sounds and word associations worked to give readers an instant mental picture of personality and perception. He knew that a name is language, and language is power."
sisabet: Lord King Bad Vid: The Backlash Edition — "The vidder gets to make the call that she is making a Lord King Bad Vid. That is the only person, you guys. And some LKBVs are freaking brilliant and we love them and don't find anything bad about them at all. YAY! We love vids! Again I say YAY! This is a *good* thing and if you are taking it as a larger fandom indictment on your personal taste because this vid carries a label of LKBV and you love it? You, my friend, are a wee bit on the sensitive side, aren't you? Get over yourself and learn to love, man."
vonknibble: Meta: OC’s and that annoying day-to-day life stuff — "Both in the shows themselves and in fiction, the best OC’s are those that add something. Often, and mostly IMO in canon OC’s are there to fill a hole, and are also often badly written so that the hole-filling is obvious to the watcher/reader. But there are those rare gems where the OC’s not only further and better the story, but are the story."

vidding: Character-oriented vids — "Where do you even start? For me it's like writing an essay without having a thesis--and please note, I am not saying that character-oriented vids do not make arguments, I'm saying that I don't know how to make an argument using the genre. Thoughts, notes, processes? Heckling?"
thelastgoodname: On Mary Sues Who Aren't Really — "What do you call it when someone replaces the hero of a fandom with their own personal favorite character, and makes that character the hero?"

fanthropology: Please to be discussing fandom words with me! — "My question is, what do you think of when you use the terms fanboy or fangirl? What do you assume you are implying when you use a certain term? How do these terms affect the way you approach gender in fandom?"
aubrem: quick poll re opting out of story reviews — "If an author put "No public critical reviews or discussion please" in their story header would you respect his/her wishes?"
