Fan-created artifacts as marketing tools! Maybe now, in the New Media world, owners of content are rethinking their objections. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, and if you can't stop the relentless spawning of fan engagement and activity, you may as well bend it to your own ends and try to channel it.

Insults, rhetoric, and defiance Some recent wanks and a locked post where some discussion of the term "nazi" being used (in regard to the recent "Nipplegate" debates re LJ's policy on default icons) have led me to think about the way insults are formulated, especially the use of "nazi" in debate, with some related ideas about the use of "gay" as meaning "stupid"...

Point of View, Story Archetypes, and Supernatural John Gardner (I think) once said that all novels have one of two plots: a stranger comes to town, or someone goes on a journey. These can, of course, be more metaphorical than literal, and I actually think it's kind of stretching in places, but as basic story tropes go, they're pretty good. What's interesting to me is how these stories break down PoV-wise.

slashing gen stories So, I was reading and enjoying this gen story by Greengecko....while reading I was struck by how warped I am. All because of the slash. This story is gen. Well and truly gen. Just ...A slasher who didn't know HP reading this story would start slashing them. I kept expecting the story to slip into slash.

33 months of writing fiction Back in workshop, we had a few rules that I am SO glad I learned before jumping into fandom.

Wheeeee! I will admit that for a few weeks now I've had an on-and-off again yearning to try collaborating on a story with someone. I've not really done that before, so the whole idea of it intrigues me and makes me get all excited.
