Fandom in Micronesia - From my limited experience, there does not seem to be an active fannish community in the area....I suspect I know why it doesn't exist and a lot of it seems obvious but needing to be stated because some areas have large fan bases in non-English speaking countries. Some of this is also speculation and I'm curious as to how on the mark it is.

The Golden Rule of Cons - Lately, it seems like the cons I've gone to (in different genres) have left me feeling completely uncomfortable with my fellow fans and shaking my head in embarrassment.

The Golden Rule of Cons... - I agree on some of the rules, disagree on others and the only one of them I think we can all agree on is: let's not ask them too personal questions. No questions about their sex lives, about their childhood or where they live or why they left their girlfriend. Everything else for me is free for all. If an actor is uncomfortable about communicating with fandom in all its crazy glory....he will not go to many cons in his life.

Rights and Resposibilities: The Novel Austen Shoulda Written - There's some debate over how fans should or should not conduct themselves at cons with actors/other show people, and some have some very strong feelings about it. Many people have been frustrated by perceived clueless people, and others are getting pissed because they feel like someone is trying to tell them what to do and disrespecting personal choice and freedom.

Terminology and picture spam - Separating 'ships into canon and UC is ridiculous oversimplification. First of all (to state the obvious), there's the distinction within "canon" relationships: with any show (that survives, grr), relationships and characters change....People will disagree over which UC 'ships are actually "canon but unrealized", but I think most fans would recognize that such a distinction exists. And people never agree about basic canon anyways...

Carrying on - A bump to continue the conversation on the evolution of writing in Highlander, started here....These are a few very broad differences I see in the stories coming out this past year compared to three, four, eight years ago.

Sort of meta, sort of not - It feels strange, and kind of leaden, to spend time in the opening paragraphs giving descriptive info that you already know ("The blonde, twitchy cop looked longingly at the uptight, handsome Mountie...") Why bother when I can just sail right into the story? But there's something to be said for making sure a story can stand on its own.

Some thoughts on writing fanfic Like my essay on slash, this is simply a personal statement of what I think about the phenomenon of fanfiction and my own writing of it, largely autobiographical in nature.
