General

[livejournal.com profile] alethialia - On Comms and Mods - But that led me to another question: what responsibility do comm mods have in the larger fandom? What if, by their policies, they actively discourage people from writing or participating in that fandom?

[livejournal.com profile] verstehen - I am woman, hear me roar. Or something. - Things and characters that put others into a frothing rage, such as Six from the new Battlestar Galactica, are often the things I appreciate most as feminist.

[livejournal.com profile] southernbangel - Thinky thoughts on LJ and friendship - So I’ve been thinking a lot lately about LJ and the nature of friendships that develop through LJ and other forms of internet interaction (email, YIM/AIM, etc.). To be frank, LJ has warped my sense of intimacy and friendship. I don’t mind posting about anything that pops into my head, no matter how personal.

[livejournal.com profile] glossing - [unfic] writing, reading, publishing - fanfic & pro - I'm taken by the passage because it expresses so well something I've long had a hunch about -writing and publishing in SF (however we're going to define that acronym) resembles, at least from the outside, fandom. (Of course it does, they're different branches of the same tree, and sometimes that tree is a baobab and the branches graft across each other.) In both arenas, there are cons, whether Wiscon or WorldCon or [livejournal.com profile] writercon, and people meet, mix, mingle in person. And they communicate and socialize otherwise, too - in letters (as Tiptree in the zine Phantasmicom) and, now, in email, on LJ, messageboards.

Fandom-Specific
Cut for possible spoilers in Battlestar Galatica, Star Wars, HP and SGA fandoms. )

Creating & Criticism

[livejournal.com profile] hobbit_hunter - Essay - Dos and Don'ts of Crossovers - When you are doing a crossover, you’ll want to avoid several things. Many of these things will be depending on what two or more fandoms you crossover, but I suggest doing no more than two fandoms for a serious story.

[livejournal.com profile] isiscolo - moments of writerly joy - I've come to the conclusion that for me, writing is a lot of work - sometimes frustrating work - punctuated by moments of writerly joy. Fortunately, the joyful moments are many, and sustained, and so incredibly ecstatic and addictive that writing for me is overall a great pleasure.

[livejournal.com profile] gmth - Reciprocity in feedback - I was thinking about fandom give and take this morning, and how other people approach the feedback process. Specifically, I'm curious about the importance of reciprocal feedback, and whether people make the decision to leave feedback or not leave feedback for a specific writer/artist based on how often that writer or artist leaves feedback for you.
