so you want to write a successful fannish essay The following assumes that the fannish essayist wishes to present her views clearly and concisely, to persuade other fans as to the logic of her points, and to engage other fans in reasoned debate. If all you wish to do is write an ode to your favorite character, or preach to the converted about a particular point, or get your rant on, then these guidelines aren't going to do you much good. Other forms have other guidelines (squees and rants, in particular, rely on the emotional tide that interferes with a successful essay, though every form does require knowing your point and making it).

Tis a Gift to Be Simple I truly believe that an important part of family life is teaching kids not to say, "Gee, Aunt Rose, this sweater you knitted for me SUCKS!"--even, or perhaps especially, if it does. And even getting the kid to wear the sweater to Aunt Rose's house for Thanksgiving, because sometimes making your aunt happy counts more than wearing a really cool sweater.

Rant: Is Adultery the Unforgivable Sin? So here is a question/rant that I know will be unpopular: adultery is bad, mm'kay? However, as bad as it is, given its ubiquity in the world today, treating it as equally bad as molesting children, committing murder, or liking Karl Rove? Is goddamn ridiculous.

True nice girls don't have to announce it to the world. Put simply, a true nice girl is nice all the time, not merely when it makes her look good. There are few true nice girls in fandom and the ones who are nice don't need to tell the world that they're nice, their own deeds say it for them.

[on “niceness”] I truly believe the two - kindness on the one hand, critical thought and discussion on the other - are not mutually exclusive.

not quite a rant on drawing books Remember a while ago back when I posted this scan of a kind of terrifying smiling Wolverine that was an example in the Wizard How to Draw: Heroic Anatomy book? Well, back when I first leafed through the book I was also pissed off at the chapters on drawing women (at some chapters more than others), but I couldn't quite figure out what exactly annoyed me so much, since it wasn't just straightforward sexism bothered me.

on queer I have had trapped in my head a set of thoughts about queerness and queer narratives and particular narratives that appeal to me in relationship-fic and how those code as queer regardless of the gender (or lack thereof) of the characters involved and this has made my brain increasingly full and unable to focus on making hot characters have sex with each other. Problem!
