The Whackadoodle Post, Newly Expanded For Your Reading Pleasure So, ignoring all the common, easily refutable reasons to hate RPF, my biggest confusion about the anti-RPF brigade is that they usually don't see real person fanfiction as the same as using real people in 'real literature.'

crewing my pirate ship of love Discussions of OTPs and shipping are perennial favorites in fandom, to the point where I created this icon as a shorthand way of indicating my stance on the topic of pairings. Except I've realized the icon only covers half of it, and not even the first half. You see, my pirate ship is manned when it goes searching for good booty. It's manned with my OTCs, which stands for One True Character.

Just Another Controversial Topic I don’t know if this is just me or is it that a lot of fandom today is targeted negatively toward female characters?

Characterisation, or Mariettastarr Sunrise Sue Could Be Worse... The Mary Sues that annoy the crap out of me are the moral ones. The ones where Authorial Bias means that the characters (and we the readers) must be told, as if from on high and none too subtly, What Is Right. Some of the symptoms of this accutely brand of Mary-Sueism for me are

'Shipping with varying amounts of canon support I'm curious about people's feelings about the strength of canon supporting the pairings they read and/or write. Here's my proposed scale of 'shipping and canon:

You can take your con-crit and shove it. You are not fulfilling a heavenly duty when you give con-crit. You are not going to save fandom. You are not going to save even one author's soul. What you're doing is giving advice, and if you're offended that some authors disagree or just don't want your advice, you need to remove your head from your ass, STAT.

That concrit thing I'm happy when I realize that my writing has improved over the years, but that's not only not a major motivation for writing fan fiction for me, it's not really even a motivation. I'm not in fandom for the larger purpose of becoming a better writer. If that happens along the way, great, but it's not why I'm here, it's not why I write, and it's not why I post.

Let's talk about SEX... Writing sex that is. I've been wanting to post this for a long time because, well -- a lot of people on my flist write sex really, really well. And I want to learn. So I thought I'd start a discussion about it with a few prompts...

More musings (or maybe I'm just masochistic) For the purposes of this poll, I have, after careful thought, chosen to go with three genres (the ones that existed when I came into fandom): slash, gen and het. I know that for some people gen and het are the same, whereas for others they are not. And I also know, by virtue of the discussion mentioned above, that there are now other terms. However, I wanted to keep it as simple as I could, whilst still offering as many options as I could. However, I know it's impossible to please all of the people all of time, so please accept that I mean no offence to anyone by opting to go this route.
