I think for a lot of people, the aesthetic standards for fanfiction are very much those for structured and conventionalized forms--e.g., distaste for OCs could be related to a belief that it's more elegant to work only with the canon character set, and lack of interest in AUs/ARs could derive from a profound interest in the canon circumstances and timeline.
