  • [livejournal.com profile] thelamefangirl in [livejournal.com profile] polyfic 2005-05-21: polyfic:: Do you ever wonder why there aren't many epic polyfics?

  • [livejournal.com profile] scatteredlogic 2005-05-22: scatteredlogic: Why do we have to choose between one or the other?: Recently, I went poking about in some HP fandom-related areas of LiveJournal that were new to me and it seems that it's become increasingly fashionable in some places to derisively dismiss any fic with a happy ending as inconsequential fluff. Apparently, to be worthwhile, a story must bleed despair, weep anguish, and leave your reader craving a Xanax because everybody knows that you can't be a serious artiste if you write fluff. /sarcasm

  • [livejournal.com profile] xylodemon 2005-05-20: xylodemon: Fannish wibbling about OCs.: Is it even possible to make me care about an OC in 1,500 words? It took me five books to give a fig about Neville, and there are still some canon characters that I don't care about, at all.

  • [livejournal.com profile] st_crispins 2005-05-21: st_crispins: Why I Write Gen: I see the "Why do you write slash?" discussion from one of the MFU lists has spilled over into LJ. Frankly, I found it all very tiresome because I don't think artists should have to defend or even explain their work, just as I think audiences have no right to demand a certain kind of work (see this entry. That said, a question came back, posed to the general list, "Why Do You Write Gen?"

  • [livejournal.com profile] toxictatto 2005-05-22: toxictattoo: Thoughts at 2 am: Bearing in mind I’m primarily a PWP writer, I think a lot of it for me is the tension that builds to sex. In the canon yaoi instances, it’s already there. You can already see it, taste it, feel it. For non canon pairings of any kind, the writer (the good writer) has to build that tension in order to really make the scene work. I think I read it as ‘getting from the door to the bed’.

  • [livejournal.com profile] fabu 2005-05-21: fabu: A rant about sex rants: Here's the thing: You can't have anal sex without loads of lube and hours of prep? You think rimming is gross? You can't stand the thought of someone coming on your face? You never, ever come without lots of clitoral stimulation? That's all useful information for when I write RPF about you. But your experience with sex != everyone else's experience with sex. There's not one right way to have sex. There's not one way that all gay men or lesbians or straight couples have sex.

  • [livejournal.com profile] petulantgod 2005-05-21: petulantgod: A Rant About Anal Sex in Fandom(s): Why is it that:

    * People who don't have anal sex write graphically about it without researching it?
    * People who would never have anal sex get off on it?
    * People who haven't even tried it are assuming it's perfectly normal for their characters?

  • [livejournal.com profile] phaballa 2005-05-21: phaballa: I'm evil, I'm skanky, and I think I'm kind of gay: And you know what? I feel the need to address those women in fandom (and gay men, actually, because you're guilty of this too) who pretend to be bisexual or say they're "open" to experiencing sex with a woman, but in actuality are only saying that because they know that some men (a lot of men, actually) think that two girls getting it on is hot.

  • [livejournal.com profile] meri_oddities 2005-05-20: meri_oddities: Comments and Criticism: What about the rest of you out there? If the story is bad enough, do you think mocking a writer publicly is okay? Do you think it helps them realize how bad their writing is? Do you think it's okay to do it in private, amongst your friends?

  • [livejournal.com profile] marksykins 2005-05-21: marksykins: Reviews in three words or less! [POLL]: Of course we all love long, glowing reviews, but say you've written a fic/drawn fanart and someone's left you a very short, positive review (e.g., "Great story! Hot!"). How do you feel about this?

  • Fandom Specific

  • [livejournal.com profile] kharessa 2005-05-21: kharessa: hurt/comfort [SGA: ep: The Storm]: We love our woobies, but we really love it when our woobies cry, don’t we? We like all the angst and pain and emotional suffering, and this episode provides us with so many lovely opportunities for all those dark and ostensibly unpleasant emotions to come out to play.

  • [livejournal.com profile] chrisjournal 2005-05-20: chrisjournal: POV, subtlety, and character perception in Veronica Mars: I may be reading much more than is really present in the intentions of the writing team, but I think it's a factor of the inverted pov they use in the the show. What we see on our screens, these mixed views of Veronica as a character, are intended. I mean, how do you suppose Veronica feels about herself?

  • [livejournal.com profile] thamaris 2005-05-21: [SV] thamiris: SV and Shark-Jumping: This is a rant. If you don't like rants about SV, that's cool, but in that case I suggest looking the other way, maybe over there, where Clark and Lex are doing it in the haystack...Lana Lang's ongoing displacement of Clark as SV's hero would be laughable if it weren't so fucking obviously rooted in Al&Miles oh-so-desperate attempt to make her matter in the face of her complete immateriality

  • [livejournal.com profile] odalisques 2005-05-22: odalisques: son, you kind of killed her during that last hissyfit...: Christ. Too much scifi/fantasy has feminism via Ann Coulter and Dr Laura. I'm a strong woman because I conform to society's most meaningless standards![MAJOR SW:ROTS SPOILERS]

  • [livejournal.com profile] evadne_ 2005-05-22: evadne_: [GEN 13]: I never thought I'd see the precise sequence of artists that would make me say, "I could really go for some Ed Benes right now," but I, in fact, have. Because Mr. Benes may be the king of T&A, but his ladies are at least shaped in believable ways. Oh, Image Comics, your stable of artists have such an entertaining take on "anatomy."

  • [livejournal.com profile] velvetandlace 2005-05-22: velvetandlace: On Wolverine, Shadowcat, and making a difference. (Racial/prejudicial parallels): X-Treme X-Men TPB Vol 5: God Loves, Man Kills. Things in point form:
