Fandom Meta:
penknife: Character types meme — "
selenak,
artaxastra, and
alara_r have all been talking about the character archetypes they're usually drawn to, so I thought I'd talk about mine. This doesn't account for every character I've ever loved, but I think it covers a lot of them."
alara_r: Types — "There's a meme going around that I've gacked from
selenak and
artaxastra about fannish archetypes we love. I'm very strongly typed, so I thought I'd explain mine."
thedeadlyhook: The 1,001 Nights of Fiction — "And this is where I get back to my point about why the auteur's attitude I started talking about does not fit with the my earlier observation about audience trust. The audience = the sultan. For long term survival, the sultan must not be toyed with, teased, made fun of, overtly sucked up to, or otherwise dismissed as too stupid to recognize said ploys. The sultan should not be made angry. You don't want to see the sultan angry."
fabu Poll: Fanfic Recs — "I'm interested in the thought process that goes into recs, as well as what readers want from recs - if you make recs in your journal (even occasionally) or follow recs to fic (again, even occasionally), please take the poll. . ."
cathexys: entry fandom poll revisited — When and how did you enter fandom?
kendokamel, in
fanthropology: Fandom on the leisure continuum — " In 1982, Stebbins coined the phrase, serious leisure, to describe those leisure activities that offer to the participant, among other things, a lifestyle and identity. This is in contrast to casual leisure, which is made up of shorter, spontaneous leisure activities that are more transient in nature."
Specific Fandom Meta:
scribbulus_ink: Fandom pimping [BSG] — "I am a pimp and an enabler, so to all the het and femmeslash writers on my flist, I dangle this shiny in front of you: The Battlestar Galactica fandom."
xfiles: New Review: X-Files 4.24 [XF] — Episode Review: "This is an example of a period when Chris Carter was really working the religious imagery with a lot more metaphorical symbolism than he would later employ at the beginning of season 7."
merryish: SG-1 and SG:A [SG] — "
carolyn_claire said that she viewed SG1 as a reach-back to the sci-fi stories of the 50's and 60's with confident, tough heroes, and SGA as a modernized version of those stories, with reluctant heroes. She stresses, as do I, that what we're talking about here are the ways the shows are different, not whether one is better than the other. The way I've been characterizing the difference in my head is really similar."
penfold_x: What's Wrong With HP Fans? [HP] — "No, really, what's wrong with HP fans? I've been in quite a few fandoms, and I've never had this much difficulty finding gen fic. While I am, as one person described, a "militant genner," I have quite a few slasher and shipper friends in my various fandoms, and I've spent time exploring sites and communities outside of my reading interests, so I think I have a pretty good picture of what's out there."
Writing/Vidding/Reccing etc:
pearl_o: i am running out of subject lines — "So one of the things that's always been in the back of my mind, then, when writing porn, has been the consideration that, hey: writing your own kinks can be really dangerous, dude. Fanfiction is about the characters, not about you, and that counts doubly so for porn; it's really easy to lose your characters if you're just doing it for what *you* like. Plus, the ickiness of being a reader and being able to play the "Okay, the author is getting off here, here, and *here*" game is ... not fun."
elynross: You call it inspiration, I call it non-consensual creativity — "--and then the voices (shut. up.) wake you up out of a bleary, slept-too-late-because-you-were-up-too-late sleep and THROW YOU OUT OF BED IN YOUR NEKKIDITY WITH THEIR NOT SHUTTINGUPNESS and you have to stagger to the computer to transcribe because you'll never remember (and sometimes more generally they throw you out of bed as you're desperately trying to go to sleep, sometimes 2-3 times in a row, with the NOT SHUTTINGUPNESS) if you don't get it down RIGHT NOW and then you can breathe because they go silent and you go get ready for work--"
fan_ta_sm: Beta Reading: — "How important is the existence of beta readers in fandoms with fanfiction? What have been your experiences with beta reading or having your work beta read? How did/do you find beta readers? What makes a good beta reader?"
brown_betty: Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Pinky? — On methods used to camouflage the fact that the character is smarter than the author.
aislingde: Was ein Eintrag alles anrichten kann... [German] — Post appears to be about songfic: "Angefangen hat es damit, dass ich mich aufgeregt habe, dass bei lyriks.de keine Songtexte mehr veröffentlicht wurden."
sdwolfpup: Vidding style — "It hit me that vidding style is not just about how you cut a vid. It's not just whether you tend to use lots of shorter clips, or effects, or movement, or intercutting. It's also about how you develop your ideas from start to finish. About what those ideas seem to be, about what types of vids and stories you seem to want to tell. Not what fandoms, but what basic elements seem to draw you in and emerge from your vids."

snapetoy: If you're Australian, please read... — "As part of their research, the skyehawke Administration Team had to do a lot of research about the laws in Australia. After all, even though the host is overseas, they manage and administer the site from Australia. Australian law applies to them. It does to all of us who are Australian. You need to know the law about child pornography, and whether the chanfic you read or chanart you look at falls within that category in your state or territory. I'm really grateful to the skyehawke team - without their research I would have gone on in blind ignorance, and that's no excuse under the law."
