Newsletter Reading Habits Still, I don't read them as closely as I used to - especially since we have the more specialized ship newsletters. Sometimes I skim them looking for familiar names, sometimes I read them more closely looking for something interesting to read, oftentimes though I don't take the time to do either. I wonder if that's just me - I've been in fandom longer and have the people and comms that interest me friended now. In the beginning I needed the newletters to show me the parameters of fandom. Anyway, I think a poll is in order. [POLL]

Freedom of Speech The freedom of speech is one of the trickiest freedoms we enjoy. On basic principle I support the right of everyone to express themselves. Yet, at what point does the freedom to express yourself conflict with the rights of others not to be harmed by your freedoms. Unfortunately self-regulation is a severly lacking skill in today's society. Too often just because we can do something many people take that as they should do it. It seems to me that these people are so wrapped up in their own needs and wants that they don't see the harm their behavior causes.

Fanfic Warning Labels The Top Ten Fanfic Warnings I'd Like To See: No. 10: I’ve never seen even a minute of this series and can’t even spell the lead characters’ names.

I should have blabb'd nothing but you (a musing on writing sextalk) The rest of this post is me being honest about sex-talk, and if you don't care to read it, you can stop after this: when we say "that's not the way people talk when they have sex," we are really saying "that is not the way I care to talk when I have sex." If people just said the latter, rather than making the blanket generalization that "nobody really talks like that," a great deal of bruised ego and fandom-wank might be avoided (she said, hopefully).

Momma, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys... - Huh. Why is crossgen - for example, Remus/Harry - more of a squick to most people than incest? Like, when presented with the choice between Sirius/Regulus and Remus/Harry, people seem to automatically gravitate toward and accept the former. The latter always ends up being a squick, for an awful lot of people (and, sadly, the fic written for that ship is rarely, rarely any good, and owes more to terrible, purple prose with a Lolita feel to it). I see far, far more Blackcest out there than Remus/Harry (or, for that matter, Sirius/Harry, but Remus/Harry is even more rare), and whenever I ask someone about Remus/Harry, I am met with uneasiness.

why can't we all just get along? (said the spider to the fly) So, apparently sexualizing a guy that most fans think is asexual causes wank. Does that work in reverse, too? If I wandered into an SG-1 discussion comm and made a post about about how Daniel is really asexual -- which I actually consider to be quite a reasonable possibility, to be honest -- would that cause wank?
